Week 3 Reflection

Updated: Feb 11, 2018

On January 31st, we discussed the first chapter of the book "Protecting New Jersey's Environment". We had people give their opinions on what happened in the chapter. A common theme spoken upon by several people was the fact that Toms River is quite a popular place and people have beach houses down there. Katie stated that her mom didn't allow her to drink from the tap as a kid and from reading this chapter, she now knows why. We also listened to our peers Rebecca, Katie, and Gabby give a talk on their project in Newark. They spoke about the challenges and what work they were doing within the community.

Last week, we also had two guest speakers come in. One of these speakers was from the Environmental Commission here in South Orange. They spoke upon what challenges hit their community and what changes they want to instill within the community. They also were very kind and invited us to join them for any of their meetings. The second speaker came from The Environmental Center. She was also very nice and she talked to us about how she chose her career path along with how her passion for the environment has driven her to work where she does today. This particular center holds summer camps and nature programs for children to expand their knowledge on the community and the natural world.

After the lesson, Professor Knapik gave our biodynamic group some books. We split them amongst each other. The books I received are 'Grow a Garden and be Self-Sufficient' by E. Pfeiffer and E. Riese, 'Weeds and What They Tell Us' by Ehrenfried Pfeiffer, and 'Planetary Influences Upon Plants' by Ernest Michael Bolton. During our time in class we also agreed upon a time in which we shall be visiting the Pfeiffer Center since the original date, which is a Saturday didn't work out.
